2023 Recap/2024 Preview

As we get closer to closing out 2023, we’d like to reflect on the year and the releases we put out. In total we had three new cassette releases from DJ Proof, Buster Wolf, and the debut of Don’t Tell A Soul, the collaboration between Artisan P and Buster Wolf. In addition to that we had a handful of live shows that took us to Maine, Massachusetts, Gainesville, FL, and a few in our local Tallahassee area. If you missed anything we did this year, this recap will catch you up!

DJ Proof - Red Wine & Veggie Burgers

The first release of the year was DJ Proof’s beat tape titled Red Wine & Veggie Burgers, which came out on March 3rd. It’s currently available as a limited edition white cassette that you can purchase on Bandcamp, or here on our website. It features 7 new songs, showcasing the more laid-back side of the Miami-based beat-maker. If you’re familiar with DJ Proof, you’ll know that his signature sound features hard-hitting boom-bap beats blended with soul samples. But on Red Wine, Proof goes for a sound influenced by jazz and the finer moments in life.

Listen to DJ Proof’s interview on the MLU Podcast where he discusses the project, and his overall work ethic and approach to music.

buster wolf - jewel cake

Later into the year, buster wolf dropped his instrumental tape titled jewel cake, which came out on August 4th. Putting out instrumental projects is nothing new to the rapper/producer, and like his many other instrumental tapes, jewel cake wastes no time in setting the sonic theme of this album. In under 30 minutes, buster wolf squeezes 20 lo-fi, vaporwave-inspired tracks, that is self-described as heatwave. The is project is available on limited edition yellow cassettes, and is available on all streaming services.

Listen to buster wolf’s interview with Peter A on the My Little Underground podcast, where they discuss this album.

Late Show Host - Season One

Released on September 15th, Season One is the debut full-length project from producer/beat-maker Late Show Host. The double single “A Word From Our Sponsors”/“City of Trees” was released ahead of the album, as a way to showcase the dynamics that can be heard in the album. A mix between boom-bap, lo-fi, live guitars, and samples, this album is just only the beginning of a more to come from this artist.

Don’t Tell A Soul - DTAS EP

To close out the year, we debuted the new collaborative project between Artisan P and buster wolf as Don’t Tell A Soul. Although they’ve been making music together for nearly a decade, this is their first official EP as a duo. Their first single, also the EP’s opening track “On Tilt” features DJ Proof on the cuts, as well as the producer of the beat. DTAS EP features the entire label roster, as its production credits also includes Late Show Host and buster wolf. We have available a limited edition white cassette, with the instrumentals on side B.

To help promote the new tape, the two rappers played a string of shows in Tallahassee and Gainesville, and released a music video for the song “Legend”. You can stream or purchase digital and physical copies of the album on Bandcamp.

2024 Preview

We have a couple projects from all the artists on the roster that are in the works to be released this year. We can expect a self-produced album from buster wolf, as a follow up to 2022’s your kids deserve better. Artisan P & DJ Proof plan to release a collaborative EP, their first full project together since Direct Flights, released back in 2016. Don’t Tell A Soul will be putting out a remix version of their DTAS EP, featuring new beats from both buster wolf and Late Show Host.
